AI Photo Booths, Explained: What Your Guests Actually Get

An AI photo booth takes an ordinary photo booth photo and redraws it. A guest steps in, picks a look, and a few seconds later they are a watercolor painting, a pencil sketch, a caricature, or a rock star on a stage in 1985. It is one of the newest ideas in photo booths, and it raises fair questions, starting with whether guests will like it and whether anyone loses the real photo in the process.

Here is how our AI Booth actually works, what your guests get from it, and when a plain photo booth is still the better answer.

How it works

The booth takes the photo exactly as any of our booths would, with studio lighting and a professional camera. The guest then chooses at the screen whether they want an AI version, and which style. The booth generates it in seconds, while they watch, rather than handing them a ticket and telling them to come back later.

Watching it happen is most of the fun. Guests bring their friends over to see what the booth did to them, and then those friends want a turn, which is why this booth tends to build a line.

Nobody is made to use it

This is the part people worry about most, and the answer is simple. A guest who wants nothing to do with AI can step in, ignore it, and take an ordinary photo booth photo. There is no version of the night where somebody is pushed into it.

A guest who does use it gets both photos, the AI version and the original. Nobody trades a real photo of the night for a novelty, and both versions are theirs to text or email to themselves before they walk away.

The three styles that work almost anywhere

Most events start with one of three looks, which are ready to go and suit a wide range of rooms.

  • Pencil sketch. A clean black and white graphite portrait on white. It is the quietest of the three, and the one to pick when a cartoon would feel out of place.
  • Watercolor. Loose washes of color around the people, with the room they were standing in suggested rather than copied. It is the one couples ask for most.
  • Caricature. Big smiles and bigger heads, drawn in seconds instead of twenty minutes. This is the one that starts a queue.

You can run a single look all night so that everything matches, or offer a couple and let guests choose at the screen. We will tell you honestly which one your run of show can carry.

A custom theme built for your event

This is where the AI Booth goes further than any other booth we run. A custom prompt comes with the booking rather than as an upgrade. Tell us the idea, however far out it is, and we build it, test it on real photographs before your date, and show you what it does, so that the first time you see it is not in front of your guests.

Union Community Care asked for the nineteen eighties for its employee retreat at Spooky Nook. Their staff came back as a band mid-set, an aerobics class, an arcade crew, and a lunch on somebody’s yacht. At The JDK Group’s summer tasting at The Bond in York, guests chose between a watercolor portrait and a caricature.

Ideas for a custom theme

If you are not sure where to start, the best custom themes usually come from something the event already has. A few directions that work well:

  • A decade. The nineteen eighties, the roaring twenties, or the year your company was founded.
  • A dress code. Black tie, a masquerade, or a cocktail party in another era.
  • A costume theme. Superheroes, a film genre, or whatever your party is already dressed as.
  • Your own campaign. A product launch, a brand world, or a slogan your team will recognize.
  • A place. A city skyline, a beach, or somewhere your guests would rather be.

Tell us the idea in a sentence, and we will build it, test it on real photographs, and show you the results before your date.

Questions people ask about AI booths

Will it still look like us?

Each style changes people differently. The caricature exaggerates on purpose, because that is the joke, while the pencil sketch and the watercolor stay much closer to the original photo. Either way, guests keep the real photo too, so nobody has to worry about how the AI version turned out.

Is it right for a formal wedding?

It can be. The pencil sketch is the quietest look and suits a room where a cartoon would feel out of place, and the watercolor is the one couples ask for most. If the booth is there purely for elegant keepsakes, the Glam Booth may suit the night better, and we will tell you which.

How long do guests wait?

Seconds, not minutes, and they watch it happen. That short wait is part of the entertainment rather than a line holding everyone up.

It is a full photo booth first

Nothing is stripped out to make room for the AI. The AI Booth includes everything our other booths do.

  • Both print sizes. Guests choose the 2×6 strip, the 4×6, or one of each, and both carry your design.
  • The glam finish. The same studio finish and filter set as the Glam Booth, so a guest who wants a straight, flattering portrait gets one.
  • Your pick of the backdrop collection. Chosen with you for your room.
  • An attendant for the whole booking. Someone who walks guests through the choices and makes them comfortable enough to come back for another round.
  • A private gallery afterward. Every photo, with face detection so guests find themselves quickly.

Where it works best

The AI Booth shines at events where the room is there to have fun and the photo is part of the entertainment. Company retreats and employee parties, where a theme gives colleagues something to laugh about together. Weddings where the couple wants guests talking about the booth at the next wedding. Tastings, launches, and fundraisers, where a restyled photo is the thing people show each other.

We bring it anywhere in South Central Pennsylvania, so a Lancaster wedding, a York fundraiser, and a Harrisburg company party all get the same booth, the same attendant, and the same custom prompt built before the date. Travel is free to Lancaster, York, Harrisburg, Hershey, Gettysburg, and Baltimore.

It is less suited to a night where the photo needs to be a straightforward keepsake above everything else, or a crowd that will not want to wait a few seconds to see what the booth made. For those, the Glam Booth or the Classic Booth is the better answer, and we will say so.

What comes with it

The AI Booth comes with three hours, an attendant, a print for every person in the photo, a backdrop from the full collection, a print designed for your event, and a custom prompt built and tested before your date. See more of what guests have been turned into on the AI Booth page.

Tell us what the night is for and the idea you have in mind, however strange, and we will tell you what the booth can do with it.
